Сложился на территории США за период от основания колоний до сегодняшнего дня. Формировался на основе британского варианта с включением элементов языков иммигрантов, индейцев. Отличается от британского элементами грамматики, произношением, написанием слов (center, theater), лексикой (gas station, railroad) и по другим признакам, имеет собственные этнические (например, [Black English]) и территориальные (например, [ Appalachian English]) диалекты.
